Father of man killed in attack says he was giving first aid; Police to review charges against teenager

0 Comments | Western Mail (Cardiff, Wales), Feb 13, 2008

Byline: Lauren Turner

THE father of a “good samaritan” who died after being assaulted on his way home, yesterday described how his son had been trying to give someone first aid moments before the attack.

Father-of-one Nicholas Baty, 48, was returning froma night out when he was attacked outside the Physique Gym in Brackla, Bridgend, on January 4.

The trained first-aider, who was also a keen surfer, was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, but never regained consciousness.

He died on Sunday. A 17-year-old boy has been charged with grievous bodily harm and remanded in custody, although South Wales Police are now understood to be reviewing the charge.

Mr Baty’s father John of St Brides Major in the Vale of Glamorgan, yesterday paid a moving tribute to his son.

The 79-year-old said, “He is the type of person who would have wanted to help out.

“We understand he went to help someone, and that’s when he was assaulted.

“He worked in France for a time and was trained as a first-aider for accidents at work.

“If anyone is trained there and sees someone in trouble, they’re obliged to help-and that’s what Nick would have been doing.”

As well as his father, mother Mary, and twin brothers, Mr Baty of Brackla, Bridgend, leaves a 12-year-old daughter, Katy, who Lauren Turner newsdesk@mediawales.co.uk lives in Bristol. His father said the last five weeks had been traumatic for the whole family.

“We had a dreadful telephone call at about 11pm on the night, saying a wallet had been found, and was it our son’s.

“I had to go and identify his body onMonday. It was the worst experience of my life.”

He thanked the staff at the hospital for their care, and added, “They have been marvellous. Although he was unconscious, he was allocated a nurse full-time, in an isolated ward. The attention has been wonderful, not only to my son, but also to my wife and myself.”

Mr Baty said friends had been inundating them with messages expressing their sympathy. A date for the funeral of his son, an engineering fitter who had maintained printing presses for the Media Wales group – which prints the Western Mail – for the past 12 years, is yet to be set.

The local coroner has been informed of the death of Mr Baty, who was diabetic.

His daughter Katy said, “I just want everyone to know how proud I amof him. He has been so brave all his life and he always tries to help people.

“Dad and I keep a scrapbook together of all our memories, but I guess I won’t be doing that anymore.”

Tributes to Mr Baty, who often surfed off the South Wales coast at Southern down, have also been paid on a surfers’ website.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Burke, who is leading the investigation, said, “This is a very sad incident where a man has been walking a short journey home having spent the evening with friends, when he was assaulted.

“We are now undertaking a painstaking investigation in order to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the assault and are keen to hear from anyone that might be able to assist in establishing the events of that night.”

Choosing the right child car seat

0 Comments | Tamworth Herald, The, Jul 1, 2010

BECOMING a parent changes your life forever. When your little one arrives there’s so much to think about, writes Leana Kell of motors.co.uk. And his or her safety is forever at the front of your mind. When it comes to choosing a car seat, your head will be full of questions: which make or model is best, how much should I pay, must I buy new or will second-hand do, and how do I fit it into the car safely? We at motors.co.uk have done the research – so that you don’t have to. Just follow our guide to choosing and fitting a car seat below.

Getting started It’s now a legal requirement to have a car seat for any child under the age of 12, or below 135cm in height, and choosing the right type will depend on your child’s size and age. Newborn babies need an infant or combination car seat, whilst an older heavier child will need a booster seat. As soon as your baby or child outgrows the limit for their seat, you MUST replace it – a child who is above or below the weight range of their seat may obscure the seat’s protection mechanisms. Avoid buying secondhand With so many items to buy, you may think that buying a secondhand car seat will save you some cash, but this is something you should avoid doing at all costs. You have no way of knowing if the seat is damaged or has been in a crash, and subsequently it may not work to its full capability putting your little one in immediate danger. Hand-me-downs are only worth considering if you are absolutely certain of their past use.

Will it fit my car? Not only does your car seat need to fit your child, it also needs to fit your car. Make sure there’s enough room around the car seat to allow it to be adjusted to all the positions necessary, and bear in mind that many car seats now come as part of a pushchair travel system, so you’ll need to make sure that you can fit the frame of the system into your car as well.

Infant car seats – are intended for newborn babies up to approximately 9kg or 20lbs. The seats are designed to give greater protection to the baby’s head, neck and spine and are rear facing. It is advised that the safest place to fix your seat is behind the passenger seat, but if you do have to put your car seat in the front seat, always make sure the passenger airbag is deactivated as an airbag can cause your baby serious injury and is illegal. Key features to look for when purchasing an infant car seat include: Reclining seat – this is vital to ensure that your child’s head, neck and back are fully supported. Head pillow – look for a seat which includes this as it will provide additional cushioning for your child’s head.

Safety harness – the seat should have a 3 or 5 point safety harness, with front adjusting straps creating easier access Combination seats – these can be adapted from rear facing to front facing, saving you money on buying two different types of car seat. They are generally suitable for newborn babies up to the age of 4 years old or 18kg/40lbs in weight. Forward facing car seats – are designed for small children who are above 9kg or 20lbs and usually around 9 months an above

Five Levels of Synergy Potential to Create Real Estate Value

Real Estate Issues, Spring 2010 by Ordway, Nicholas, Friedman, Jack P

PROFESSIONALS IN THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY FREQUENTLY use the word “synergy.” An Internet search in early 2010 using the search string “real estate synergy” resulted in 980,000 hits on Google and 1,130,000 hits on Bing. Downloading a sample of these sites indicated that “synergy” is used primarily as a marketing concept.1 The concept of synergy is commonly used by industry groups such as property developers and shopping center operators. There is, however, little explicit discussion on how synergy creates new value. Standard real estate valuation textbooks indicate little coverage of the concept and its applications.2

The objective of this article is to propose a definition for real estate synergy; further, to identify how synergy may be applied to real estate assets on five separate levels. Because of such innovations as the Internet, globalization, securitization of mortgage markets and other changes, real estate analysis requires thinking more about linkages that can create synergy. Many real estate projects are affected by changes in a set of networked externalities that affect the internal economics of the project itself. Synergy is a useful analytical concept for considering value potential for linkages to externalities.

SYNERGY AND REAL ESTATE

The root of the word “synergy” is the Greek word synergia, which is defined as joint working, working together, collaboration or cooperation. It may be useful to rethink the real estate value in the context of the General Systems Theory. The biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy is credited with articulating this theory in 1936. It was quickly adopted and extended by others in many fields. Systems theory describes connection, organization and interdependence of relationships. The advantage of a systems approach is that the decision maker can better understand how small changes in one part of the environment can produce unexpected effects on components of the real estate project or deal

A competent tax pro will get the job done quickly and efficiently. Best of all, in an area where the consequences for getting it wrong can be huge, his expertise will ensure that the job gets done right.

Then there are additional benefits. If there is a problem, many will represent you before the tax authorities. And your tax pro can advise you on tax questions and strategies.

So the money spent is a bargain and the decision to hire his services is easy.

The same logic applies to other areas. If you find it difficult to write good copy for the postcards and letters you use for your direct mail campaigns, consider hiring a copywriter.

If you hate keeping your books, hire a bookkeeper. Or at least buy decent accounting software and hire someone to help you set it up properly.

These days, virtual assistants can work on specific projects or handle everyday mundane tasks. And you won?t even have to carve out a place in your bedroom home office for them.

And if there is too little money available, a business consultant can help you grow your business.

The money spent will more than repay itself in greater time for you-and a better result.

Energy Composites Corporation Completes Production on Large Diameter Flue Gas Desulfurization Duct

Business Wire, July 22, 2010

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. — Energy Composites Corporation (ECC) (NASDAQ OTC:ENCC) a leading
provider of composites-based solutions to the clean-tech sector, today
announced that it has completed production on two large diameter
integral flanged duct spools for use in a flue gas desulfurization (FGD)
installation. The spools represent the companys latest work for the $10
billion FGD market. ECC expects to deliver the spools this month.

Utilities in the United States face a 2015 regulatory deadline for
mitigating the emission of sulfur dioxide from coal-fired power plants
in compliance with the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The most
effective mitigation strategy is the use of FGD scrubbers, which require
very large composites-based structures that are both abrasion and
corrosion resistant. ECC expects the FGD market to grow through 2015 as
utilities make final decisions on their compliance strategies.

ECC builds scrubber components using Class I Premium Grade Fire
Retardant Vinylester Resin, Boron Free fiberglass materials and 100 mil
Carbon Veil liners to create required conductivity for the units.

The contract with a large engineering firm requires the fabrication of a
sixteen-foot diameter, 24 foot long spool and an eighteen-foot diameter,
26 foot spool. Both spools are made in one piece construction and
self-supported with fiberglass reinforced plastic saddles attached.

Innovative thinking won us this contract, Jamie Mancl, ECCs founder
and President, noted. Being able to produce structures this large in
our climate controlled facilities allows us to ensure the highest level
of quality while delivering cost effective solutions to our clients

Fleeing drug trafficker abandons girlfriend

0 Comments | New Straits Times, Jul 15, 2010

KUANTAN: A suspected drug trafficker abandoned his girlfriend in the car as he fled a police ambush along the East Coast Highway at Kampung Bintang, Temerloh, on Saturday.

The suspect was caught after a short chase and a minor struggle some 20 metres away from his Proton Wira.

Police later recovered a plastic bag on the road shoulder which was thrown by the suspect, which contained 100 packets of white substance, believed to be heroin, worth RM13,800.

The suspect’s 22-year-old girlfriend surrendered immediately to the police after witnessing the 5pm drama.

The suspect later led police to his rented house at Plaza Temerloh where police found 44 plastic packets containing white substance, believed to be heroin, weighing 108g.

Later in the day, the suspect led police to another suspected trafficker who was nabbed while riding a motorcycle near the Temerloh toll plaza.

Police seized a green plastic bag from the suspect containing 12 plastic packets of a white substance, believed to be heroin.

State anti-narcotics chief Superintendent Yap Thoon Kuan said initial investigation revealed the syndicate got their supply from a neighbouring country and had been actively involved in drug distribution in Maran, Temerloh, Mentakab and Jerantut since April this year.

Plasma Membrane Microparticles in Angiogenesis: Role in Ischemic Diseases and in Cancer

Physiological Research, 2008 by Mostefai, H A, Andriantsitohaina, R, Martnez, M C

Summary

Microparticles are small fragments of the plasma membrane released by activated and/or apoptotic cells. In theory, all type of cells can shed microparticles representing a physiological process in the cell life. Mainly, microparticles generation has been studied in different cardiovascular pathologies due to the facility to obtain blood samples from individuals. Although microparticles have been considered as simply markers of several diseases, in the last decade, several studies support the hypothesis that they participate in the regulation of the cardiovascular system function by carrying biological messages between cells. Among the effects of microparticles, recent data show that they can be implicated in the modulation of neovascularization, an essential function of cells from cardiovascular system during either ischemic diseases or cancer development. Whereas during pathologies associated with ischemia an increase of neovascularization may have beneficial effects, anti-angiogenic strategies represent new approaches for manipulation of tumor development. Here, we give an overview of the mechanisms and factors involved in neovascularization, and finally, we look at the role and the consequences of the modulation of this process by microparticles in pathological situations.

Key words

Microparticles * Endothelial cells * Ischemic diseases * Tumor development

Vasculogenesis, angiogenesis and neovascularization

There are two distinct but interconnected processes for the formation of postnatal new blood vessels, vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. The former is referred to the formation of the earliest vascular network via the differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) (also called angioblasts) into endothelial cells (ECs) (Asahara et al. 1997)

Liow: Be more vigilant in fight against dengue

0 Comments | New Straits Times, Jul 27, 2010 | by Adib Povera

SUNGAI PETANI: Malaysians are still not doing enough to help the authorities check the dengue scourge, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai lamented yesterday.

He described the situation as “very alarming” considering there were 91 deaths recorded so far this year compared with 88 cases last year.

“We appeal to the people to keep their homes, offices and surroundings clear of mosquito breeding areas.

“We must be more vigilant since it is now the rainy season and rainwater could collect easily in many places,” he said.

A total of 27,400 cases and 91 deaths due to dengue have been reported between January and yesterday, according to ministry statistics.

Liow said the death toll reported so far this year involved mostly adults.

Last week alone (July 18-24), seven deaths due to dengue were reported from 1,071 cases, the highest weekly cases recorded so far, Liow said after visiting the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here.

He said prevention programmes and enforcement operations, especially in 34 identified hotspots, would be intensified as 80 per cent of premises inspected so far in the these places were found to have aedes mosquito breeding grounds.

Selangor still has the highest number of dengue hotspots with 17, followed by Johor (6), Kuala Lumpur (6) and Sarawak (5).

The minister also urged Malaysians to check with the authorities before going for organ transplant abroad.

“We have received many complaints on post-surgery complications from Malaysians who opted for organ replacement abroad.

“As such, it is very important that patients ensure the organs are obtained from recognised health institutions.”

He said of the total 1,007 Malaysians who underwent organ replacements abroad in 2008, about 59 per cent of them did so in China.

Liow did not elaborate.

On Malaysians pledging to donate their organs, he said the number was low, with only 39 donors recorded last year.

“We have about 10,000 Malaysians on the ‘urgent waiting list’. However, we do not have enough donors for vital organs such as kidneys, livers, hearts and lungs.”
